I can’t believe it’s already March. The New Year is definitely well underway. It has
been all go around here so we thought now would be a fantastic time to bring you up
to date with the upcoming missions and fundraising events for 2006.
We have the great pleasure of informing you that this year will see not one, but two
missions making the journey to Tanzania. In the beginning of July Dr. Andrew Wild
will be heading the mission to the CCBRT Hospital in Dar es Salaam. This surgical
team will comprise of surgeons Mark Lee and James Savundra, surgical nurses
Margaret Twine and Patricia Masterson, and recovery nurse Takako Hosie. Jill
Green (Occupational Therapist) will also accompany the team, providing additional
support for the mission. In the middle of July, a second team led by Tony Baker, will
be heading to Mwanza. Accompanying Tony Baker will be Chris Allen (surgeon) and
Ross Boulter (anesthetist), as well as nurses Gillian McCallum, Fiona Walker and
Phyllis Jones.
The trip from some villages to the CCBRT hospital can take up to three days by bus
so having a team in Mwanza will make it easier for the mining sector to send patients
from their surrounding villages. We currently have representatives identifying
children in the villages but without the assistance and support of the mining
companies the surgical teams would not be able to help those living in such remote
areas. In this regard we would like to acknowledge the continuing support of Barrick
Gold, Placer Dome Tanzania, AngloAshanti, and Resolute Mining.
After the tremendous success of the Rafiki Dinner in 2004 and 2005 this year’s
dinner promises to be as exciting. We are currently finalising details and will pass
them on as soon as possible. In the meantime we would like to invite you to visit the
Rafiki website www.rafiki.info, which will be updated soon, for current information on
the upcoming missions, and the sponsors and people that make it all possible.
Once again, thank you very much for your generosity and support.
Yours sincerely
Didier Murcia
